Valletta, the capital of Malta and UNESCO World Heritage site. This small city will blow you away with history, culture, cuisine, beauty and more. Valletta is a regular award winner for top city break destinations and its easy to see why!
Valletta, the capital of Malta and 2018 capital of culture. This small city, in its entirety, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The history of Valletta jumps out at you around every corner from its stunning buildings, architecture and narrow cobbled streets that ooze age and sophistication.
The city is a fortified city surrounded by giant walls looking over the Grand Harbour. The harbour and Malta’s location mean Valletta has seen a lot of action over the years from the Knights of St John, Ottoman invasions and sieges and played a huge role in WWII with Malta being the only country rather than an individual to be awarded the George Cross for heroism and devotion of its people during WWII. All these influences can be seen, and history can be learned from various museums and attractions.
With buildings in Valletta like the St Johns Co Cathedral, Malta Parliament, Grandmaster Palace, Sacra Infermeria and surrounded by fortifications, it really is an open historical city museum brimming full of masterpieces. Many films have been shot here including large parts and iconic scenes from ‘Assassins Creed’ due to its stunning setting and skyline.
There are a range of hotels here from the five stars like the Phoenicia Hotel Malta and Grand Hotel Excelsior that sit just outside the walls and plenty of small self-catering, three star and 4-star hotels inside. Whatever hotel you choose, Valletta Malta Holidays serves up some of the best food and drink on your doorstep, sites, and museums to visit and explore one of Europe’s top city destinations.
