There is a small stretch of sand here but most of the coastline is rock, there is plenty of flat rock areas to sunbathe especially near Wignacourt Tower, the first in a series of towers built by the Knights of St John back in 1609 and is popular for sea swimming, perfect for snorkelling with the sea being crystal clear and teaming with sea life. St Pauls Island is a hot spot for divers and there are a number of Diving Centres located here.
St Pauls Bay is named after the biblical tale of St Pauls shipwreck, it is said that his ship ran aground on St Pauls Island whilst on way to Rome during a storm and this set-in motion the Christian traditions in Malta.
