Marathonisi Island, Greece

But Zante's Turtle Island, in the middle of the Bay of Laganas, has to be one of the most beautiful places to visit. People sometimes call Zante's Turtle Island Marathonisi Island. Before the Second World War, a few people from Zante lived on this small private island.
People have moved on, and now the only people on the island are loggerhead turtles, which are on the verge of extinction. Caretta caretta turtles are another name for these rare and gentle creatures. All boat trips must leave the island by sunset when turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs.
