A Brief Travel Guide To Heraklion, Crete!

Heraklion is a great place to visit because there are so many things to do there. Check out this brief guide to help you plan your trip.

The best activities in Heraklion, Crete

One of the major cities on the island of Crete is Heraklion. It is a hub of culture, history, and tradition where the new and old coexist to create the perfect vacation spot.

Crete is a place that I absolutely adore, and I have no doubt that you will too, if you go there.

It is one of the best Greek islands since it has something genuinely special. I want to share with you some advice in this article on the top attractions in Heraklion.

WHAT TO SEE IN HERAKLION, CRETE

Spend some time exploring Heraklion after you arrive. Heraklion is a modern city, in contrast to other Cretan cities, and only a few remnants of the old town remain.

Even though it appears to be a large, busy metropolis, it offers charming little corners and hidden beauty.

The top activities in Heraklion city are listed below:

Old Town

Explore the harbour area and the ancient town. The Venetian-style white buildings and the charming lanes filled with souvenir shops are clearly visible.

The port is dominated by the Koules Venetian Fortress.

It is a square structure that dates to the 16th century when the Republic of Venice ruled the island. This and other Venetian structures are still intact in Heraklion.

It took the Ottomans 21 years to invade the city because the fortifications defended it from hostile incursions. It is a distinctive feature of the city and has historical and architectural significance.

The Venetian Loggia is a striking structure in Saint Titus' Square and one of the Venetian structures I appreciate.

This structure has historically served as a gathering place for the city's nobility and politicians, and it continues to have this function as it currently houses the Municipal Council. The structure is unfortunately off-limits, but you may still appreciate its exquisite architecture from the outside.

The Morosini Fountain, built in the 17th century, is just a few feet away from the loggia. It served as a source of clean water for Heraklion residents and, as a result, has always been a significant gathering place for the community.

A bustling square with cafes, bars, ice cream parlours, and restaurants surrounds the fountain and draws both locals and visitors.

Shopping in the Old Town

The ancient town's winding lanes are lined with a variety of stores. Central Market is the name of the major street. The best presents and souvenirs for your friends are available here, including reasonably priced clothing, jewellery, postcards, magnets, and local goods.

You can spend some time visiting the boutiques if you have an interest in fashion because they have clothing from both national and international designers.

Pilgrim in the Churches of Heraklion

Several old, historic churches may be found in the Old Town, along with old structures, tourist shops, and bars.

Agios Minas Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Greece and a popular attraction in Heraklion, is only one of the sights to see. You may see distinctive frescoes inside that were painted in a Byzantine style.

The 16th-century Saint Catherine's Church is located in St. Catherine Square next to the cathedral. It has historical significance since it was a hub for science and the arts, where notable Heraklians studied. A small display of wooden artwork, paintings, vestments, and manuscripts is shown inside the church.

My personal favourite in the city is the chapel of Agios Titos, which dates back to the 10th century and is the oldest church there.

Numerous times, the church has been demolished and rebuilt. Its last refurbishment occurred when the Ottomans transformed it into a mosque; therefore, it differs from the conventional Greek churches you see all across the island.

Visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

The history of Crete dates back to the Stone Age.

One of the most significant ancient civilizations, the Minoans, called the island home.

I could go on for hours about these wonderful times on the island, but you can find out more by going to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which has exhibits from all across Crete.

Original murals from the palace of Knossos are on display here, along with ceramics, golden jewellery, toys, clay figurines, and weaponry. You will learn about the island's prehistoric past by visiting the museum, which will make you appreciate Crete even more.

In the summer, the museum is open from 8.30 a.m. to 15.30 p.m., and admission is 12 euros for adults and 6 euros for kids.

Visit the Historical Museum, the Museum for the Battle of Crete, and the National Resistance Museum if you want to learn even more about the history of Crete. Additionally, there is the Museum of Natural History, which features displays of Cretan flora and wildlife.

Nightlife

Cretan nightlife is quite unique and special. There are locations for every type and interest, and many parties last into the wee hours of the morning.

You can locate a typical pub where you can eat and drink while enjoying the music of nearby performers! You can order traditional Cretan dishes in these places.

In my opinion, you should try dakos, gamopilafo, kalitsounakia, and sip traditional Cretan tsikoudia.

After supper, stay put and take in the lively environment, sip tsikoudia, and embrace the Cretan way of life rather than rushing home.

Additionally, there are lots of choices for bars and clubs where DJs spin international songs and revellers dance and party till the early hours of the morning.

ENJOY HERAKLION, CRETE'S BEST BEACHES

Ammoudara Beach

Ammoudara Beach, which has golden sand and sparkling waters close to Heraklion's centre, is a paradise next to the metropolis. It has received the Blue Flag for being exceptionally clean!

There are restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard station on the beach. Additionally, ramps exist, making the beach wheelchair accessible.

Sunbeds and umbrellas are available at the beach bars, so you may relax while sipping your coffee.

Ammoudara is a well-known kiteboarding location, and on windy days, it's common to see numerous kiteboards in the distance. You can ask for an instructor at the kite school by the beach if you want to try this sport.

Potamos Beach, Malia

Potamos Beach in Malia is located about 35 kilometres from Heraklion. It is a location that draws both tourists and residents. Because of the calm waters, it is a beach that is appropriate for families.

You can set up your umbrella on the beach, but if you don't have the necessary furniture, you can hire loungers at the beach bars that are located there.

You may visit the beach and go sightseeing at the same time because it's adjacent to the Malia archaeological site.

Matala

One of the most well-known locations in Crete is Matala!

Hippies gathered there in the 1960s, and it continues to draw visitors from all over the world today. This beach's scenery is quite captivating.

A granite wall with several caverns is located on one side of the shore. The beach's blue waves are often tranquil and immaculate.

The settlement of Matala, where you may find dining options, lodging options, and other services, is located on the opposite side of the beach.

Agiofarago beach

I recommend this location to folks who want quieter, less crowded beaches.

It takes 7 kilometres to get there on foot, but it is worthwhile because you end up in a lovely cove with little pebbles and pure blue waves.

The chapel of Saint Anthony, constructed in the fourteenth century, is located close to the beach, among caves.

You should bring everything you could possibly need because there are no utilities at the beach other than a canteen.

  • A day trip to the Phaestos Palace

Another gorgeous Minoan palace that I adore is Phaestos. The palace's ruins and courtyard are accessible by foot. The Lybian Sea and a broad view of the surrounding area are seen from the highest point. Take one guided tour to learn everything there is to know about Phaestos and the Minoan civilization.

The site is open daily from 8 a.m. to 20 p.m. during the summer, with admission costing 8 euros for adults and 4 euros for kids.

  • Rouvas forest and gorge

The Rouvas Forest had to be included in this post because I like the natural world. It is located in the southeast region of the Psiloritis mountain, 61 kilometres from Heraklion. For Cretan flora and animals, the gorge and forest are essential natural habitats. It is a component of the NATURA project, which safeguards locations like this. Prinos, also known as Quercus coccifera, is the plant you see most frequently.

The gorge is 4 km long, and there are various routes you may take to learn more about the region.

  • Go to Acharnes.

Drive to Acharnes if you want to see what a typical Cretan village looks like.

This village has received a European prize for the impeccable upkeep of its historic buildings. The vibrant homes and charming architecture of this village fascinate me.

Since Acharnes has guest homes, you can stay here. The locals are nice and welcoming, and they always give you a warm welcome.

  • Discover Fodele

A village worth seeing is Fodele, which is located 30 kilometres from Heraklion.

Dominikos Theotokopoulos, popularly known as "El Greco," the renowned Greek painter of the Spanish Renaissance, was born there.

In Fodele, there is a tiny museum devoted to his creative endeavours. The fact that this community blends mountains and the sea is another factor in its popularity with travellers. You may unwind on the beach or stroll along the river beneath the shade of the large trees.

You may also see the historic Panayia chapel in the village.

  • Explore Sfendoni Cave.

The Sfendoni (also known as Tripa) cave is located 43 kilometres from Heraklion.
